The show focuses on love so much. Unlike most romantic shows, it is executed in a sincere and original way. But I think the main strength of this show is the way the characters deal with these emotions. They don’t neglect them and hide them. Even when they know that they will be rejected, they go the extra mile to confessing their love for that person. I just find that so realistic. When their really is true love, it can’t be contained. The person has to know how you are feeling in order to have some closure on it, even if you have to accept the reality that they don’t have the same feelings for you. In the same sense, it’s also impressive how much Kaito fights for his relationship with Ichika. He is willing to face the universe for his relationship with her, and I think that’s a huge factor in love. As Wallace Wells from Scott Pilgrim once said, “If she really is the girl of your dreams then you have to let her know. You have to overcome any and all obstacles that lie in your path. You can do it, be with her, it's your destiny...plus, I need you to move out.”
When I found out that A-1 pictures produced Ano Natsu De matteru, I was extremely excited. I have been a huge fan of their shows, but the one that came to mind immediately was Anohana. The art style was extremely similar. From the shading to the bright colors and hair designs, this show borrowed a lot of it’s art designs from Anohana. They used it in a very original way though. The show captures the summer setting, and displays things like the grass and the sky in a beautiful and almost infinite way as if the summer would never end. An aspect of the show that I really liked was the focus on Kaitos and Ichika's glasses. I thought it was really cute how whenever they kissed, you heard the clank of their glasses. It may be a small and inferior thing to notice, but it’s small details that they put into the show that makes it stand out.
This show literally kept me on the edge of my seat at all times. Whether it was from blushing at the awkward scenes Kaito imagined or seeing his relationship with Ichika reach their high points, it was an amazing experience. It showed me that while relationships have their different stages, love can literally power the relationship through them. Love is something that can lead a person to go to great lengths to fight for it, and also confess it. Even if it isn’t returned, it is something that has to be let out. If I have to wait for love, you will just catch me waiting in the summer for it.
